Leah-Lynn Plante’s Statement and Demonstrations in Support of Grand Jury Resisters

My name is Leah-Lynn Plante, and I am one of the people who has been subpoenaed to a secret grand jury, meeting in Seattle on September 13th, 2012.

This will be the second time I have appeared before the grand jury, and the second time I have refused to testify. The first time was on August 2nd. I appeared as ordered and identified myself. I was asked if I would be willing to answer any questions. I said, “No,” and was dismissed after being served a second subpoena.

Over a month later, my answer is still the same. No, I will not answer their questions. I believe that these hearings are politically motivated. The government wants to use them to collect information that it can use in a campaign of repression. I refuse to have any part of it, I will never answer their questions, I will never speak.

It is likely that the government will put me in jail for that refusal.

While I hate the very idea of prison, I am ready to face it in order to stay true to my personal beliefs. I know that they want to kidnap me and isolate me from my friends and my loved ones in an effort to coerce me to speak. It will not work. I know that if I am taken away, I will not be alone. We have friends and comrades all around the world standing behind us, and even though this has been one of the most traumatizing experiences of my life, I have never felt so supported or loved. I can only speak for myself, but I have every faith that the others subpoenaed to these hearings will likewise refuse. And I know that hundreds of people have called the US Attorney demanding that they end this tribunal. Hundreds of organizations, representing thousands of people, signed onto a statement expressing solidarity with those of us under attack and demanding an end to this sort of repression.

I know that those people will continue to support me, the others subpoenaed, and the targets of the investigation. That spirit of solidarity is exactly what the state fears. It is the source of our strength, yours and mine. And that strength shows itself in every act of resistance.

Forever in silence,
Leah-Lynn Plante

Support Leah and Matt by coming to one of the solidarity demonstrations happening Thursday and Friday!

  21. I am a father,a brother,a son,and a friend. I would not want this to happen to anybody I know because of something they read. I will stand up to these thugs who hide behind badges and harass people who have different beliefs than they do.

  22. Admiration and buckets of support all the way from England!

  23. Unfortunately, I was unable to be at either demonstration of solidarity. I live on the East Coast. Neither one of the kids should be facing this alone. They should have an advocate present. This is where their young age could work for them. However, if they are over 18 than that stinks, as they cannot have anyone to speak for or with them. I do NOT condone what the government is doing in the name of justice. The FBI should be seeking out the REAL criminals. Not some kids doing research. My prayers go with them both!!

  24. Seems like America is becoming nazi germany, the government can not stand it when the people stand together and fight back. Much love and support from toronto canada. Fuck the government and fuck the system

  27. What can I say, Leah Lynn Plante you are a hero, instead of attending McCarthyist-Nazi type grand jury show trials you should be getting a medal… the land of the free ? what a joke.
It’s hard to believe but those big macho men are actually terrified of you…Ha.
Anyway take care, Goldman and Berkman are watching you.

I am so proud of you. And so ashamed of what’s going on in my country, state, and city. I am also afraid of our militarized police force in Portland, so admire your courage even more!

  37. Greetings from Alaska, Unfortunately we cannot be there to show our support- But stand strong and in peace knowing that we are strong behind you. ❤

  38. I propose that we not only refuse to talk to the FBI, but also any official in the Judicial system, any politician and any law enforcement until they repent in shame for being traitors. We hear the idea that good Muslims should actively denounce bad Muslims. Well I say good politicians and police should denounce this treasonous tyranny. Not only refuse to talk to them, but refuse them EVERYTHING. At restaurants, refuse to serve them food. At grocery stores, do not ring them up at the register. At hospitals, refuse to help them let them suffer a they make others suffer. If you are a sanitation worker, do not pick up their garbage, If you drive a taxi, refuse to pick them up, if you deliver anything, don’t deliver their stuff. If you repair things, do not repair their things. Let them rot until they give these young people justice AND beg for forgiveness.

  39. you have a supporter from vermont what the fbi did is completly unconstitutional

    • What ISSUE is this in regards to? She was called to testify WHY? For what CONCERN, for what ISSUE, what CASE?

  42. I support you Leah, rise above.

  43. I don’t know all the details of this investigation, and to be honest, I don’t care. “The Land of the Free.”… Obviously, that sounds great, right? And that’s the point: it SOUNDS great, which makes for an attractive advertisement for a country. Unfortunately, it is nothing more than an illusionistic slogan. Maybe “The Land of Imperialism” didn’t fly as a slogan that would get people to flock to this country. History has taught me (I can only speak for myself) that this country is an empire, plain and simple. Because of their actions alone, I believe that the individuals involved are true patriots of this country. Just so it’s clear, here are the definitions of the word “patriot”: 1) a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion. 2) a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government.

    Peace and love to all.

  47. Hang in there, Leah-Lynne! Thank you for the sacrifice that you are making. The real criminals are the ones so terrified of those who speak the truth that they send their armed poodles to obediently suppress it.

  48. Hi Leah…. Ive been wondering why I hadnt heard from you….Best of Luck and Loads of Love from Mark.and The Mob…. We are coming over to see you next month…. Be Strong

  50. America has been slowly shifting towards the far right for the last thirty years. British visitors are treated like terrorists when they visit the country, so this oppression of their own people comes as no surprise. What happened to America?

The fear of dwindling resources first came onto my radar with the film Three Days of the Condor. That was a long time ago now and the issue is much sharper today. Instead of simply accepting it, that everyone is in the same boat, the powers that be are desperately trying to cling onto their current riches. Stupid. We all live and die and take nothing with us. Let it go.

I see this action against these people as an extension of that fear and paranoia that the US is going to lose everything it has, a stupid attempt to stop the decay that is not going to work in a million years, picking on people who are not going to make a jot of difference, instead of getting the corporate dynasties and the greedy super rich to cut everyone else some slack.
